writing samples  TECHNICAL An article on the statistical analysis of ultrasonic backscatter from heart muscle.   SCIENCE FOR GENERAL AUDIENCE A published article from a two-volume reference work on climate change (Climate Change: In Context) for readers at the high school or introductory college level. This article reviews the state of scientific knowledge about recent climate change in Antarctica. I submitted a large number of topic-specific articles for this work. Other authors' work was editorially merged with my text in some cases, but this sample, apart from the "Primary Source Connection" text, the "Arid Antarctica" sidebar, and editorial adjustments to punctuation and certain phrases, is entirely my work (including the "Words to Know" definitions).   FICTION This story won the Mark Twain Prize for Short Fiction from Red Rock Review in 1998.    ESSAYS This short essay on reading aloud in a changing world appeared in Orion magazine in 2007. This longer essay on the religiosity of the space-colonization movement appeared in Turnrow in 2008.
